Gerrit Cole is using a straightforward approach to improving upon his first start of the season. The Yankees have won four of their last five games in game three of a series. The Yankees right-hander was able to keep his season start from entirely derailing — he let up three runs in the first inning before bouncing back with three shutout frames. The Blue Jays are a lot less intimidating than the Red Sox, so we won't be surprised if the pitcher has more room to work with than the 68 pitches he threw across four innings against the Red Sox. He faced them five times last season and posted a 3.72 ERA across 29 innings, when they still had Marcus Semien but did not yet have Matt Chapman.
It would be an understatement to say Jose Berrios wasn't at his best, giving up four runs on three singles and two walks in barely one-third of an inning in Friday's 10-8 win over the rangers. Berrios was left out of the decision. In addition, he struck out a hitter and threw a wild pitch. Yankees are 5-1 in their last 6 games vs. a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30 and are 36-17 in their last 53 Wednesday games.
